The Queen Arnegunde
This has been one of my favorite garb topics since I first stumbled across it on the Anglecynn website several years ago. I loved that it was something early period that no one else seemed to be doing, and it was fairly close to my persona. I also found it aesthetically pleasing, always important. So I made the first incarnation:
The coat is peach silk dupioni, with some sort of shiny gold trim, and the tunic is red linen. The coat was too long, but I shortened it soon after this picture. The sleeves were too short, and if I moved my arms at all, they were halfway up to my elbows. Later research showed me that a slubby silk would have been a lining, not an outer garment. Also, the trim was hideous. All in all, I decided that it needed to be redone. align="center"> This time I made the outer coat out of a smooth wool twill, and used the old silk for lining, which I took apart and resewed by hand, piecing the sleeves to make them the proper length. All seams were done with the "reinforced running stitch" as shown here. The lining is bag lining style, meaning that I made the entire outer coat, the entire lining, and then hemmed them together. I used some brocade strips as trim, which I later took off to embroider and never finished, so it is currently untrimmed. The red undertunic also had some issues (not full enough gores, sleeves too short and tight, neckline cut too big and finished with bias tape, ugly selvedge showing in some parts) which I haven't bothered to correct. It's pretty much living in the back of my closet these days. I wear a variety of simple tunics underneath the coat now, or sometimes a peplos. Some Arnegunde links |
